How to prepare Bulletproof coffee

I give you a warm welcome to this new article, where we will see a recipe that maybe you have heard before, or maybe not; it is bulletproof coffee. When I first heard about this drink, it didn’t catch my attention and seemed strange.

I will explain briefly if you have no idea what I am talking about. Bulletproof coffee consists of mixing coffee with butter and MCT oil. But, you may be wondering why we would do such a thing.

This drink has become very famous in recent times. Many people consume it as a breakfast replacement because it is said to provide a great amount of energy and concentration for a long time, bring general well-being, and turn our metabolism into a fat-burning machine.

Preparation of Bulletproof coffee

Let’s see how to prepare this coffee, first I am going to show you the step by step to make one, and then I will tell you a little more about its benefits; it is important to clarify that I am not a nutritionist nor an expert in health issues and you should not take anything I say here as medical advice.

What is needed to prepare Bulletproof coffee?

To prepare this drink, first, we need to ensure that the beans are of good quality, fresh and healthy, and without toxins from past harvests.

It is recommended that the preparation be done with a metallic filter, such as the French press, the Moka Pot, espresso machine, or some other manual filter, but with a filter or metal mesh. This is because the coffee will have greater sediment than a paper filter and emulsify the final beverage a little better.

In addition, we will need good quality butter; the original recipe calls for butter from grass-fed cows and MCT oil. This oil is a refined extract of coconut oil, which makes up 50 percent of the coconut oil.

MCT, or medium chain triglycerides, has several extra benefits, the main one being that our body uses it quickly for energy, so it doesn’t store it as fat, as happens with coconut and other fats, but gives you something of a major energy boost, satiates the appetite and aids weight loss.

The original recipe, invented by Dave Asprey, includes 10 ounces of coffee, approximately 30 grams of butter, and 30 grams of MCT. I recommend making the coffee a little more intense than you normally prepare if you drink it black since we will dilute it a little more with fats. For example, I use a medium roast Colombian coffee, with notes of chocolate and caramel, in a ratio of 1:15, and I prepare it in the French press.

Step by step to prepare Bulletproof coffee

In this preparation, we are not going to be so attentive to obtain a clean cup in the elaboration of the coffee, as I have mentioned in other articles, so follow these steps:

  1. We start by preparing the coffee. After weighing the 20 grams of coffee and grinding it in a medium coarse size, with a texture similar to breadcrumbs, we place it in the press with the 10 ounces of water at 90 degrees and let it infuse for four minutes. After this time, we slowly lower the plunger, which is ready.
  2. It is important to use a blender, mixer, mini blender, or frother so that everything is well-mixed and emulsified. I recommend having it with hot water before using it to preheat it so that the temperature of the coffee does not drop once we put it in.
  3. After discarding the hot water, we add our coffee, the 30 grams of MCT, and the 30 grams of butter and beat hard for a few minutes
  4. Now we serve it, and it is quite bubbly and has a color similar to a Latte, but the flavor is very different.

Result of the preparation of the Bulletproof coffee

It is tasty because we have rich ingredients, good coffee, and fat, which, as we know, goes very well with coffee.

It is rare because you can feel the texture of the butter and the oil, but it does not add much body to the beverage. The coffee flavors are a little opaque, especially the bitterness, it is not like with the milk that is softened, but at the same time, there is no butter taste.

It has a slightly strange acidity that reminds me of almond milk. I’m only drinking coffee with almond milk with higher fat content. But I was surprised; I liked it. It is not something I would choose to drink every day, but as an experience, I think it is very good.

It is not as rare as one might imagine, or at least I think that most people find it a little strange to put butter in coffee, but in truth, it is a practice that goes back many years.

In Ethiopia, after the discovery of coffee, around the 15th century, they used to mix ground coffee beans with animal fat, forming small balls to be used as rations in warrior expeditions due to its highly energizing effect.

Why choose to drink Bulletproof coffee

You may have heard of the ketogenic or keto diet because this drink is a big part. I am not going to explain this diet in detail, but you can look it up yourself, but I recommend that you get information from health professionals and nutritionists specialized in these topics.

This diet is about reducing carbohydrate intake to a minimum, increasing the number of fats, and with a good amount of protein. By doing this, our body transforms the fatty acids in our diet and fat into ketones. These ketones are energy in our body and brain instead of carbohydrates and glucose. This diet has a lot of benefits, both physically and mentally.

Going back to bulletproof coffee, this drink contains fat and zero carbohydrates. In addition to the benefits I named a while ago of providing more energy and satiety for hours, the MCT induces the state of ketosis, and the caffeine in coffee promotes the production of ketones in our body.

Many people in this diet supplant it for breakfast because it gives them the energy and satiety to be active for many hours. Now, if you add sugar to this drink or take it with toast or croissants, this ketogenic effect is annulled, and you will store all this fat in your body.

This type of coffee is quite well known, especially in the United States; if you did not know it, I encourage you to try it and see if you like it and if it works for you. The truth is that it is good when you need that longer-lasting energy boost. It is very easy to do, and it is quite a fun experience.
